My question is:

Which of the news announcements do I use to stay away from the market? For example on May 22nd, USD had announcements 8.30am, 9am, 10.05am, 10.30am - but it only seems to be the 8.30am one that gave a 120 pip rise in the opposite direction to the trend.

Any guidance appreciated.

Most news times have a substantial impact. The affect news items have is not depended on the time eg. 8.30am, 9am, 10.05am, 10.30am. The reaction to the news influences the pair differently each time. For the time scenario you gave it would be best to avoid the whole block starting from the 8.00am and resume after the 10.30 am news. It is hard to blow up an account if you are in cash, watching the market from the sidelines. Besides this is a 24hour market that leaves plenty of time to find other trading opportunities.
