Apparently in the UK there are 83,000 spread betters and only a tenth of those also trade CFDs. Only 10,000 trade only CFDs.

Why so few?

It mentions in the article you linked to that some traders say the spreads are too wide and that tighter spreads would encourage more traders to invest in spread betting. But there is no comparison in the article to other trading methods such as Forex and Futures so there is no way to know if the small numbers are of traders in general or just of spread betting.

It also mentions lack of time and money which would discourage people from entering any trades not just spread betting.

Also, this is only a UK survey and tells us nothing about the rest of the world.
