Interview with Travis Dahm, Director and Vincent Visoiu, Senior Trader and Developer of Wiseman Capital Management
Travis Dahm and Vincent Visoiu of Wiseman Capital Management speak with Forexpros.com What is your name and position in the company? Travis Dahm, Director and Vincent Visoiu, Senior Trader and Developer What is your professional background? Vincent Visoiu graduated as a Foreign Medical Doctor (M.D.) from Central America Health Science University in Belize. Applying his analytical medical background from medicine of relying on objective tests to arrive at the correct diagnoses for patients, Vincent is applying the exact objective approach to the development of automated systems specialized in trading the FX market. Working diligently with a team of Ivy League Economic and Mathematics PHD professors that specialize in market analysis, he devised several trading algorithms based on Artificial Intelligence that constantly self-train and dynamically adapt themselves to the ever changing FX market. Travis Dahm worked as the Director/Executive Manager working on overseas projects and uses his experience to manage the client relations aspects of the management company dealing with clients from all parts of the world as well as various brokerages and referring agents. How did your firm come about, get started? Wiseman Capital Management was founded in 2004. Like many Forex Managers, we saw the growing vast opportunities in the FX market and became excited about the potential growth it has to offer especially with the application of our Automating Trading Strategies. It took several years of acquiring the necessary base knowledge to learn the “ins and outs” of the Forex market. This process resulted in the development of several proprietary trading strategies including conservative risk application and powerful money management algorithms which ultimately constituted the combination used in successful automated management. We believe our unique trading approach synergistically address all the necessary aspects of successful trading has given us an edge in the FX market. Could you please describe the solutions your company offers for the Forex market? The main problem we see in the Forex industry and with the majority of other Forex Money Managers today is their lack of focus on risk control and focus on the highest theoretically achievable profit. Often we see time and time again Money Managers that advertise inflated returns like 100-1000% per month however they are taking uncontrolled risks to achieve these numbers. Whether it is a Martingdale, La Bouchere or a Hedging strategy approach or just simply using very high leverage to try to achieve these high returns, we feel that those unrealistic approaches that expose the client to excessive high risk have no place in a safe, long term and most of all consistent rate of return plan that clients are looking after. Our primary focus is a low risk, long term achievable consistent returns with the upmost attention on the client’s fund safety. Contrary to popular belief, our main focus and concern when designing a system is NOT the profit. Even though profit is important, our number one concern is always the risk control. Our core belief is to first control the risk and the let the profits come by the application of good strategies. The risk and reward (reward to risk ratio) of the trades issued by our automated systems is always calculated and known even before a trade is placed. We believe that by using the lowest optimal stop loss range and by limiting the time the position is held, the system achieves a very effective risk control. Even with the best system, you must have good money management and risk control for the system to profit over the long term. Our philosophy is “First control risk, then everything else will fall into place.” Who is your targeted audience? The majority of our clients are hedge funds that are looking for alpha enhancement of their portfolio and high net worth individuals striving for diversification in the FX market. We prefer clients who understand the base elements required for successful trading the FX market and understand the risk associated with trading in order to achieve consistent returns. We feel that because risk control is such a priority to us, we can be more selective with our clients who meet our criteria. What are the main advantages you have over your competitors? While there are thousands of fund managers using various strategies to manage client funds, we feel that our proprietary automated systems stand apart from the rest for very important reasons. By using exclusively automated systems, we take the human subjectivity and error factor out of the equation. By applying the same algorithms with a certain percent of an edge over and over 24 hours a day we feel certain that the statistics achieved during the past and during our long term back tests will accurately continue to unfold in the future and achieve our expected rate of return in accordance to a risk controlled plan. In today’s turbulent conditions, the most important capability is the ability to adjust to the market which is chaotic, always moving and an evolving continuum. We have achieved this adaptability by using Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) based Neural Networks which allow the system concepts to evolve and keep up with the ever-changing market conditions. We use a 4-hidden layer probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) model that “learns” from the inter-relationship of the currencies and takes advantage of the specific price relationship between them at a deep tick level relationship. What are your perspectives for future growth? As earlier stated, our main goal is client fund safety with a consistent and achievable rate of return. We always focus on a long term and growing relationship with our clients. Every client is different and we cater to each client’s individual risk and reward expectations. By establishing a good client presence and by being consistent with our returns over the long term, we strive to get new clients and new capital from all over the world in order to establish a strong global presence. Which tool/ piece of software do you believe is most important for a trader? We believe that it is essential to have a FX trading platform that supports Automated Strategies. The most FX popular platform at this time is Metatrader 4/5 which we exclusively use to host our Automated Expert Advisors. Other platforms worth mentioning are Tradestation, eSignal, Ninja Trader and NeoTicker. It is also essential to have the cleanest feed possible and this is why we insist on brokers that offer a pure ECN/STP (straight through processing) feed. This is easier said than done in the Metatrader environment which is a platform originally designed to support a retail feed. Many brokers claim that they are ECN/STP, however their feed is not the raw feed coming from the liquidity provider. Its spreads are seldom marked up and some employ a “virtual dealer” which causes excessive slippage and interferes with the auto-order execution of an Expert Adviser. Due to the nature of the FX market which at times requires very fast and precise execution, it is essential that that the trades codes his/her strategies in a fast execution language like C++ or .NET C into a DLL and uses this DLL for all the algorithmic calculations. What is your favorite technical indicator? This is a very difficult question to answer which may have no good answer at all. Every Linear indicator (MA, RSI, Stoch, ADX etc.) is good for a certain market movement (trend, countertrend and sideways) and for a certain market pattern. As soon as the market changes pattern the indicator becomes not useful. This is the main reason that instead of continually optimizing linear indicators which does not lead to successful trading over the long periods, we have decided to use self-adjusting indicators based on non-Linear Neural Networks. The Neural Network constantly monitors its performance to the current market and as soon as it senses that it is falling out of step with the market it then self-trains itself in the background to keep a “fresh” optimal performance. Whether it is a simple RSI, MACD or Stochastic indicator, the addition of the Neural Network to it in order to dynamically optimize its parameters never allows it to fall out of step with the current FX market. | |||
