TOKYO, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Japanese wage earners' total cash earnings fell 0.1 percent in October from a year earlier, the first drop in 10 months, boding ill for consumption with the economy already in a recession.

Overtime pay, a barometer of strength in corporate activity, fell 3.1 percent from a year earlier to mark the third straight month of decrease in a sign that companies were feeling the pinch from the global economic slowdown.

Total cash earings amounted to 274,751 yen ($2,876) in October, falling slightly after a revised 0.2 percent increase in September, government data showed on Monday.

An index measuring real wages, which takes into account the impact of price moves, fell 2.2 percent in October from a year earlier, following a revised 2.1 percent drop in September.
