NEW YORK, Oct 23 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks extended losses on
Thursday, sending the Nasdaq briefly down more than 3 percent,
as investors fretted about signs pointing to a faltering
economy and dimming outlook for corporate profits.
Trading was volatile, with indexes gyrating between losses
and gains.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 48.98
points, or 0.57 percent, at 8,470.23. The Standard & Poor's 500
Index <.SPX> was down 12.71 points, or 1.42 percent, at 884.07.
The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 42.78 points, or
2.65 percent, at 1,572.97.
